How can I update my MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017 as it is on software update macOS 10.13.6 (17G66)

System Preferences>Software Update didn't come along until 10.14/Mojave.

You can upgrade to macOS Monterey 12.6.1. Be aware, 32bit apps are no longer supported with Catalina and above. Any older apps will have to be updated or replaced. You can check which ones with Go64.
