Ventura 13.0.1 does not recognize USB hub external HDDs

Running this on a 2018 Intel Mini. After years of external drives being hooked to my trusty powered Rosewell USB 2.0 hub, OS 13.0.1 no longer recognizes the hub. There are 4 external hard drives hooked to this hub. Each of the drives are recognized individually when hooked directly. Same hub works great on my 12.6.1 MB Pro; even passing through a USB-C adapter. The issue is specific to the Ventura update.

Additionally, I have tried 2 other hubs including a brand new USB 3.2 hub I thought might do the trick. OS 13.0.1 simply can't see the drives through a hub.

I've seen other articles that say to allow accessories to connect in Privacy & Security. That option doesn't exist in 13.0.1. I can search for it in system settings, and the setting is found in the search results. However, there is no actual setting to change.

I've done all the expected things like reset SMC, PRAM, boot into safe mode, etc... 13.0.1 just can't do it. The only way to downgrade to 12.6 is to blow everything away and start over. Anyone have a workaround outside of the nuclear option?

After hours talking and looking for a solution with the Apple support my problem with the HUB is not solved yet. The second USBC gate is still not working. They advised me to have checked if there is a hardware problem.

So I have to send my MacBook Air to the Apple repair department.

So strange, because working with Monterey there was no problem at all. 😕

Unfortunately the M1 Mac Mini with Ventura 13.0.1 does not have the option like the M1 MBA with Ventura 13.0.1

As for the 13.0.1 breaking the USB Hub in 13.0.1 - do not think so.

There is a Release Candidate 13.1 in the wings and set to be released when Apple Decides it is ready.

But if that will fix the HUB issue is unknown.

What I have observed, especially starting in Monterey, right from the get go, USB Hubs, be they self powered or USB Powered, the Chip Set in the HUB was a determining factor if it would work or not work

USB Hubs, be that Self Powered ( via Cabling to Wall Socket for power ) or USB powered from USB Female Socket to computer have become an issue since Monterey macOS 12

From observation on these Forums, it is very dependent on the Chip Set contained within the USB Hub.

Some work and some do not.

It is really a " Trial and Error " effort.

I can not suggest any specific USB Hub as I do not use them

Updating to Ventura 13.1 resolved my issues. Everything works the way it used to for the past 8 years.

Side note, it appears the OS is monitoring the power draw on various USB ports. Non-powered hubs threw power management errors I've never seen from Mac OS. My powered hubs seemed to be forgiven more.

There's a lot of talk about USB hub chipset. Although this may be the case, I had my doubts in this consensus as I had no issues in Monterey either... although there were reports of this. I've been using the same powered hub since 10.7... with a hackintosh for several years. I've been daisy-chaining HDDs since my SCSI days on OS8. This is nothing new in the Apple world. Fast forward to my 2018 i7 mini.

With my setup, I have a USB-C dock/hub/exHDD, 4-port USB-C hub, dual HDMI monitor/USB-C monitor, and my old Rosewell USB 2.0 powered hub. The Rosewell hub has 3 exHDDs and a printer on it. None of it (on the Rosewell) worked. What a ******. I was starting to believe the chipset thing until I bought a brand new USB 3.2 powered hub that also did not respond.

Throughout my frustration, before upgrading to 13.1, I decided to plug my powered hub into the dock. I got USB accessory power management error I've never seen from Mac OS and it shutdown the connection to the dock where my keyboard and mouse are plugged. 1 annoying reboot later, everything back to normal.

It's my personal belief that Apple has changed peripheral power management settings to account for issues with newer M notebooks. The fact that M series hardware has a USB accessory option in settings (and my Intels do not) strengthens my hypothesis.

In summary, 13.0.1 nixed my Rosewell 2.0 hub. 13.1 has everything back to normal. If it were a solely chipset issue, I would imagine this old 2.0 hub would be in a recycle bin by now. However, it is absolutely plausible that the hub chipset plays into power management as well; coming full circle to it being a chipset issue.

I'm sharing my experience to hopefully spark an idea or shed some light for you. My unpowered hub is a 4-port wavlink I bought from Amazon for about $15. However, I strongly suspect Intel vs M will treat results differently.

At this point I'm rambling. Best of luck, but don't expect Apple support to have an answer.

Not sure this is relevant on your machine but on M1 MBA there is an option present as per the below image

Will double check Saturday on M1 Mac Mini and post back if I remember to do so.

Unfortunately, the Intel does not have this option. However, this is a best guess.

Is that 13.0 or 13.0.1? I'm curious if the .01 update may be the cause and not the Intel.

I have tried the option you mentioned,...... ask for new Accessories. It is still not working.

Now I am going to instal Ventura 13.1 Fingers cross, otherwise I have to go back to Monterey.
