volume lowers when I open certain apps or unlock my phone

Seems to happen most when I open instagram and/or turn on my screen when it's dark, but also happens randomly when other apps open, including Dark Sky and some apps that don't produce sound at all.

I've turned off "Attention Aware" and "Reduce Loud Sounds" like other posts suggest, and it's NOT the buttons being pressed unintentionally. It's not even that the volume is "lowered," moreso that the max volume of the phone is decreased. I can't even turn it back up manually because the phone is already set to max volume but it's still so quiet I can't hear it. Happens with bluetooth connection, iPhone speaker, and headphone equally.

Hello clair724,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Since it sounds like this may happen with certain apps, we'd recommend trying app troubleshooting next. Try the steps below from If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open - Apple Support.

1 Force the app to close. Then open the app to see if it works as expected.

2 Restart your device
Restart your iPhone or restart your iPad. Then open the app to see if it works as expected.

3 Check for updates
To see if updates are available for the app, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, then scroll down to see if updates are available. If updates aren't available for the app, update the software on your iPhone or iPad.

4 Delete the app, then redownload it
Delete the app. When you do this, you might lose data that was stored in the app. Then redownload the app. Then check to see if the problem with the app is fixed.

If the same continues after those steps, considering the steps you've already tried, it may be best to reach out to Apple Support for a closer look.

Take care.
