TV App Plays on Wrong Monitor

Hello all,

When running macOS Ventura 13.0.1 (22A400) I am encountering an issue in which every time I play content from the TV app it opens on a different monitor than I want.

My setup is my MacBook Pro on the left, and then two side-by-side Studio Displays. The main display is set to the center monitor. Mission control has auto switching disabled.

The Apple TV app opens and is placed on the center monitor. I go to play content, and it always opens on the right monitor.

This forces me to move the content from the right monitor to the center monitor either by using Mission Control, or by minimizing the content and dragging it over.

Either way, next time I open the same content, or different content, it continues to open on the right monitor and not the main center monitor.

Anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

Thanks!

Hi Da BomB,

The information here will show you how to assign a specific app to a specific desktop or display:

"Assign apps to spaces

If you assign an app (or System Preferences) to a specific space, the app will always open in that space.

  1. On your Mac, press and hold an app’s icon in the Dock
  2. You may need to first open the app to see its icon in the Dock.
  3. From the shortcut menu that appears, choose Options, then choose one of the following:
    • All Desktops: The app opens in every space.
    • This Desktop: The app opens only in the current space. If you use the app full screen, it appears in its own space.
    • Desktop on Display [number]The app opens in the current space on a specific display (if more than one display is available).
    • None: The app opens in whichever space you’re using at the time.

By default, when switching to an app, the desktop automatically switches to a space that has open windows for the app. For example, if you create a new TextEdit document in Desktop 3, but TextEdit windows are already open in Desktop 2, your new document opens in Desktop 2. To change this setting, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Mission Control, then deselect the checkbox for switching."

Doing that for the Apple TV app, you should be able to assign it to the specific monitor you want it to always open in.

Cheers.

Hi there,

It is a 16'' Apple MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip, 32GB RAM, running Ventura 13.0.1 (22A400). The two displays are 2x 27'' Apple Studio Displays, which are indeed connected via Thunderbolt and running Display Version 15.5 (Build 19F80) with Extended Display enabled on both.

You raise an interesting point regarding official compatibility, however, there aren't any issues outside of the Apple TV app. No other app functions with the same behavior of opening windows on an incorrect display. This makes me suspect that the issue is within the Apple TV App itself.

The issue doesn't pertain to restarts, however, the setting I believe you're referring to is the "Close windows when quitting an application" which is indeed enabled (thus closing windows on quit, and should not allow this to persist).

Any further thoughts or things I might be missing here?

Hello Da BomB,

We would need a bit more information (about the specific computers being used, the monitors connected & by what cabling, etc. You mentioned Studio Displays, so it’s Thunderbolt, we would assume?) in order to try to narrow this down enough for a solid answer. But here are a few things to consider:

Do you have extended desktop or video mirroring setup? This article explains more about that: Use one or more external displays with your Mac - Apple Support. You may want to test in both outputs to see if the behavior changes. Also, in that article, it explains:  “For Mac computers with the Apple M1 Chip: You can connect a single external display to your Mac.” Double external monitors may not be supported there.

There is an option to “Reopen windows when logging back in” with your Mac. Are you using that option or is that box unchecked?

Let us know a bit more about this and we'd be happy to try to advise further. Take care.
