Screentime Issues

Hi All —

I use Screentime in a few ways to block unproductive uses of my iPhone 13 mini. But I updated to iOS 16.1.2 this week and it seems to have broken Screentime.

The most valuable use for me is the Content & Privacy Restrictions —> Content Restrictions —> Web Content —> Limit Adult Websites tool, which I use to block timewasters like Twitter, Instagram, etc.

Although I currently have that restriction setup as it always has been, those websites are no longer blocked — even if I enter their URL into Safari the exact way it is written out in the “Never Allow” section of that tool, there is no block and the website loads.

Getting the sense from some other discussions on MacRumors forums and here that this most recent iOS update messed up Screentime. Does anyone know of any fixes, or if Apple is aware of the issue and working on a solution?

Thank you!

Hello AppleUser1840,

This behavior sounds specific to Content & Privacy Restriction, so we recommend taking the following steps: Use parental controls on your child's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

"Set Content & Privacy Restrictions

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Turn on Screen Time, then tap it again. Choose "This is My [Device]" or "This is My Child's [Device]."
    • If you're the parent or guardian of your device and want to prevent another family member from changing your settings, tap Use Screen Time Passcode to create a passcode, then re-enter the passcode to confirm. After you confirm your passcode you'll be asked to enter your Apple ID and password. This can be used to reset your Screen Time passcode if you forget it.
    • If you're setting up Screen Time on your child's device, follow the prompts until you get to Screen Time Passcode and enter a passcode. Re-enter the passcode to confirm. After you confirm your passcode you'll be asked to enter your Apple ID and password. This can be used to reset your Screen Time passcode if you forget it.
  1. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode, then turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions."

To prevent web content, not just specific apps, try deleting the website and re-adding it.

"Prevent web content

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and enter your Screen Time passcode.
  3. Tap Content Restrictions, then tap Web Content.
  4. Choose Unrestricted Access, Limit Adult Websites, or Allowed Websites.

Depending on the access you allow, you might need to add information, like the website that you want to restrict."

Cheers.

AppleUser1840,

We appreciate those additional details. We recently released iOS 16.2. Updates like this install feature enhancements and bug fixes that can resolve issues like this. These steps from Update your iPhone or iPad show how to do this:

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.
5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

Once your iPhone is fully updated, let us know if this issue with restricted websites continues and we will move forward from there.

Take care!
