USB numeric keyboard malfunctioning on MacBook Pro 2021

I have an Apple USB numeric keyboard plugged to my MacBook Pro with an original Apple adaptor. And a Wacom tablet plugged to the keyboard.

Tablet works just fine, but the keyboard malfunctions. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. When it works, I can use it all day long, with long periods of the laptop sleep. After start up, randomly works or doesn't.

When it does not work, if unplugged for a while, tends to work again.

And works absolutely fine with my old iMac.

Is this a software problem?

Here's what I see on the "About this Mac" right now, Keyboard is connected but not working at all.

Hi nasiscal,

Thank you for those details. There are a few other steps you can take to isolate this issue a bit more, before leading us to determining there is a hardware issue.

You mention not having another keyboard to test, do you have any other USB accessory that you can test? Does it function successfully?

Is your Mac running the latest macOS available for the model? An update needing to be installed can cause unexpected behaviors such as what you're experiencing.

Check out the steps on how to update your Mac here: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen:
Choose System Settings. Then click General in the sidebar, and Software Update on the right.
Or choose System Preferences. Then click Software Update.
2. If Software Update finds new software, click the Update Now or Upgrade Now button to install it.
Software Update windowe

3. Enter your administrator password, if asked. During installation, your Mac might restart, and you might see a progress bar or blank screen several times.

Regarding your concern about hardware, you can run a diagnostic test on your Mac to rule that out using: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support

If this continues, you may want to reach out to Apple Support for further assistance. Depending on your region, you may be able to reach them here: Get Support

Hope that helps!

Hey Omar_A1,

Thanks for your reply. I followed your steps, no result.

Now I tried to plug the keyboard and Wacom to the external screen and got this message:

USB Accessory Needs Power

Connect "CTL-671" to a USB port on this Mac.

Then I plugged the keyboard to the external screen (2021 DELL 4K) and the Wacom to the laptop and seems to work.

If I plug the keyboard to the Laptop (without Wacom) still not working.

I don't have another keyboard to test, but this one works absolutely fine on my former iMac, and also works when plugged to the Dell screen, so I don't think the Keyboard is the issue.

Do you think there's something wrong with the Laptop?

Thanks!
