Messages app - unexpected behaviour: defaulting to conversation list

I like opening the messages app on the last conversation but every time I leave the app it opens on the conversation list on next visit.

Note that I am not 'force quitting' the messages app...it is still open in the background between visits.

Is there a known fix for this unexpected behaviour?

Hey Emmet Smyth,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities! If you haven't already, quit the Messages app and restart your iPhone to see if fresh connections help to resolve this:

You'll also want to be sure you're updated to 16.1.2 as updating helps by installing bug fixes and important security updates. To see what you have installed tap Settings > General > About. If an update is needed, back up your iPhone first: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.
5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

If the behavior continues at this point we recommend reaching out to Apple Support to look into this more with you: Contact - Official Apple Support

Take care!
