Play audio on multiple AirPlay devices from macOS

Hello

I recently purchased several HomePod mini devices and I am unable to stream macOS system audio to them simultaneously in the scenario described below.

I am able to select and stream to multiple devices via iOS (verified on versions 15 and 16). I am also able able to stream to multiple devices from macOS on specific sources (e.g. YouTube).

However, I am unable to select multiple sound output devices in the macOS system audio settings (verified on macOS Monterey version 12.6.1). There are no checkmarks displayed and selecting another AirPlay device switches the audio to the selected device (i.e. the previously selected device stops playing).

I wonder if this is intended (i.e. not possible), a defect or hidden in some settings? Can someone confirm this working in macOS Ventura (yet)?

P.S.: I tried creating a multi-output device in the Audio MIDI Setup app but it does not let me add any AirPlay devices.

Is this a missing feature or is there any other way of playing macOS system audio to multiple AirPlay devices?

Hi blizzfire,

We'll be glad to go over this with you. Under the Mac section in Use AirPlay to stream audio - Apple Support

it states "You can't use AirPlay to stream audio to multiple speakers from the menu bar on a Mac."

We hope this clears things up for you.

Are you saying that you're unable to select more than one speaker at a time?

You can also set up a stereo pair for your HomePod Minis as outlined here: Set up a HomePod stereo pair - Apple Support

"Create a stereo pair

You can create a stereo pair with two HomePod mini speakers or two HomePod speakers. (You can’t create a stereo pair with a HomePod mini and a HomePod.) To create a stereo pair, both HomePod speakers need to be assigned to the same room.

In the Home app on your iOS or iPadOS device, touch and hold a HomePod.
Scroll down, then tap .
Tap Create Stereo Pair and follow the onscreen instructions."
