iCloud drive not syncing to macbook pro

My iCloud drive is synced up between the website, phone, and desktop mac, but my MacBook pro does not have the same files/file structure as the rest. I have checked the iCloud settings and the iCloud drive has everything checked off but the desktop and document folders because I do not want my whole desktop and documents folder to sync. This laptop hasn't been used in months but now I am using it again so it would be nice for it to sync.

Hi zjones99,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

You mentioned that the Mac has not been used in months, are there any software updates that need to be installed? The reason we ask is that if the software is not up to date it can cause unexpected behavior such as what you are experiencing.

1. To update your Mac: From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen:
Choose System Settings. Then click General in the sidebar, and Software Update on the right.
Or choose System Preferences. Then click Software Update.
2. If Software Update finds new software, click the Update Now or Upgrade Now button to install it.
3. Enter your administrator password, if asked. During installation, your Mac might restart, and you might see a progress bar or blank screen several times.
