IOS 16.1.1 - iPhone drops both cellular and wifi network randomly

With the upgrade to IOS 16.1, my iPhone seems to be randomly not connected to any data services, not through the cellular nor wifi networks.

Usually, it drops the data connection immediately upon locking the screen, because 100% of the time, when I unlock the device, none of my apps work for the first 2-3 minutes, all giving the message "could not connect to the server" or "no internet service". And also for the first few minutes after unlocking, the wifi symbol does not display.

It is nice that apple has suggested toggling airplane mode or wifi mode, but a fix would be nice. I just upgraded to IOS 16.1.1 and immediately after unlocking I see this has not been corrected.

What good is a phone that will not connect to anything???

Hi mwcorg,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. Since you're having issues with both cellular and Wi-Fi connections, we recommend resetting your network settings.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to General General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Keep in mind, this also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.

If the issue persists, we recommend contacting Apple Support to look into this further. Contact Apple Support

Take care.

Ok. So as I replied earlier, I reset my network on my iPhone. After 5 days here is my summary:

When I unlock the phone, I have no connection for about the first 2-3 minutes. Although it shows either 5G or LTE, every app gives "could not connect to server" or "no network available". Then after clicking the 'retry' several times:

    • If I am at home, the wifi icon appears in place of LTE or 5G and suddenly my connection is good
    • If I am out, suddenly my cell data starts working correctly

The iPhone stays connected until it locks again, at which time I am back to the beginning of this summary, with no connection.

So, I have now updated to IOS 16.1.2. I laughed at how this upgrade makes it "more compatible with wireless carriers," as if a phone's primary purpose is to do something other than communicate with wireless carriers. Brilliant stroke of genius to advertise that an upgrade is designed to bring the device closer to actually functioning correctly. But only more and not fully, as me, Swe_Josh, and probably hundreds of thousands around the US found out.

One thing I noticed (I have At&T as my more compliant carrier), is that I now have 5G in lots of places where I only had LTE under 16.0.0 and 16.0.1.

Second, it takes less time for the phone to actually connect to something after unlocking it than it did under 16.0.1. Now, I get to watch the wheel spin for only about a minute before the phone connects and starts to function correctly instead of waiting 2-3 minutes for each of multiple attempts.

But it still does not work correctly. Maybe the Apple IT staff can find some time in their next sprint to get this whopper bug they introduced out of their phone. Maybe not.

But for now, my iPhone 13 is at least closer to being a phone again than it was 3 weeks ago.
