Music Doesn't Sync Properly - Unknown Album on iPhone when in Music all is fine

Hi,


I have had this issue for awhile now, and can not find a fix. My Music used to all sync fine. However, now, most of the music I created from CDs now shows up on my iPhone after syncing as unknown album, yet all is fine in Music on my Mac. I have searched for a solution, and can not find any. This is most annoying as I have. huge music library, and now most is useless to sync on my iPhone or iPad. Is there a solution? And to repeat - ALL the music is properly assigned to an Artis and album on my Mac - it's only when I try to sync on my iPhone or iPad.

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.


We understand that your music is not syncing to your iPhone properly. To address this behavior, connect you iPhone to your computer. Open Finder to iTunes. If you're using macOS Mojave or earlier or Windows PC, then you will open iTunes. Remove your music from iPhone and sync it back.


1. Open iTunes and connect your device to your computer with a USB cable.
2. Click the device icon in the top left-hand corner of the iTunes window. Find out what to do if you can't see the icon

3. From the list under Settings on the left-hand side of the iTunes window, click the type of content that you want to sync or remove.* To turn syncing on for a content type, tick the box next to Sync.
The tickbox next to Sync Music in iTunes.
4. Select the tick box next to each item that you want to sync.
5. Click the Apply button in the bottom right-hand corner of the window. If syncing doesn't start automatically, click the Sync button.

Is the "unknown" album one that you created yourself or burned? We understand it appears correctly in Music on your Mac, but if you go into the info for the album do you see the names of the artists and additional details? This may not be syncing to your iPhone.


To find the details of the unknown album:

  1. Open the Music app on your Mac and locate the album.
  2. Tap the three dots.
  3. Choose Get Info.
  4. Select the Details tag to see the information there.


Let us know what you find out.

Thanks for the reply. However, I know how to sync files to my Phone from my iMac. The issue is some items are not syncing properly, and while being just fine on my iMac, sync to the iPhone and/or iPad as Unknown Album. All the metadata for the songs/albums are fine. This seems to be an issue others have posted about, yet I see no solutions. It seems to happen with albums that one rips themselves.

Hi 1ssmith,

Yes, all the metadata is correct, album, artist, etc. These used to synch just fin in the past. However in the last year I get a bunch of albums with this unknown album, and hence when it syncs to the iPhone, instead of 1 album with say 12 songs underneath it, they sin as 12 different items with "Unknown Album". ALL the data is fin prior to syncing, and on my MAC with all the correct meta data

I have this same exact problem. All of a sudden virtually all of my music is syncing to my iPhone as individual songs instead of as part of an album although they are obviously all in music/iTunes as an album. And like yourself, I've been doing this for years and albums that once synced correctly do not now. Very maddening! Did Apple Support come up with an answer? Please reply if they did. Thank you!
