Can I store old messages in iCloud to free up memory from my device and the erase from device and keep only in icloud

How do I access old messages saved on iCloud? my icloud storage says it is full- mainly from messages... I am trying to see what messages are saved on there so I can delete ones that I don't need / certain text threads from certain people that i no longer need.... is this possible? or is it an all or nothing situation (turn off icloud message and lose everything?) No. Any message in iCloud is also on your device. If you delete it on your device, it will delete from the cloud. Might be time to do some housekeeping.
