Repeated download error for iOS software update

"iOS software update failed. An error ocurred downloading iOS 15.7.1"

I've tried multiple times and have almost 5 GB of free storage on iPhone 12.

5 GB is not enough space in my experience. You will need at least 6 GB and probably more. 8+ strongly preferred.
