Unable to pair wireless keyboard to Mac

My apple wireless keyboard is not connecting. The computer "finds" the keyboard but is unable to pair with it.

Using the apple menu Bluetooth pairing option mentioned in another thread isn't available, because without my keyboard I can't enter my password and access any part of the device.

Any ideas?

Thanks
