Transfer pictures and videos from first generation iPad to iMac (late 2009, High Sierra 10.13.6

Re-posting question from September - Sadly, the suggestion provided did not work. It recommended opening Photos app on Mac - did that, but iTunes also opened - not able to move pictures that way either. Old iPad (original version) no longer has internet capability so I cannot email the pictures to myself at another device. Original question: "I cannot get the pictures and videos from first generation iPad moved to the iMac. I've tried Image Capture, and also via cable - nothing works. The iPad did have cell capability but I turned that off years ago...now using a newer iPad that does not include WiFi built in"

Do I need some type of thumb drive that would accept the USB plug on end of cable - transfer to thumb drive and then load to Mac? Must be a way to do this.
