Why is Air Play so unstable?

Air Play is very unreliable. It works great some of the time, but it often freezes and drops in and out. It says it’s playing while it’s not. When I have people over and try to play music, I spend half the time trying to get the airplay to work correctly. It’s supposed to be simple— instead it’s stressful.

I have all Apple devices … I stream from my iPhone mostly, but I also use my iPads and my Mac desktop. I stream directly to HomePods or Apple TV. I have one gig of Wi-Fi on a mesh network. This should work. It doesn’t… At least not consistently. Why?

Hello AnnaMS,

AirPlay is a great feature and you've come to a wonderful place for help. To confirm, are you having the same issue when streaming from your iPad and Mac, or only from the iPhone to the HomePod? If you're having issues when streaming from all devices, restarting the HomePod can be a very helpful step. While simple, it can very likely resolve the issue you're facing. You can find the steps for restarting listed below and in the following article.

  1. "Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that's signed in with the Apple ID that you used to set up HomePod.
  2. Tap or click HomePod.
  3. Tap or click the Settings icon , scroll down, then tap or click Restart HomePod."
