How to connect a guitar to iPad for use with GarageBand

I am trying to figure out how to connect my electric guitar to my iPad to use with GarageBand. I tried to connect the guitar audio cable (1/4" jack) to 1/4"-to-3.5mm adapter, then to 3.5mm-to-USB-C adapter that goes to the iPad. But that didn't work - nothing in the GarageBand indicates the guitar is connected.

Some websites suggest additional hardware, but I am not sure that's really needed.
