if I am on an iMac and have Catalina, can I upgrade to Ventura directly?

System Preferences gives me no alternative but upgrading directly from Catalina to Ventura. For other transitions I've seen recommendations to take a stepwise approach. Would it make sense to first go from Catalina to Monterey? If so, how would one do it?
