After starting with command R and accessing disk utility, I want to recover my volumes and disks. I don’t know terms. The hierarchy (top to bottom) on the Disk Utility window is: Macintosh HD; disk 2; >OS X Base System. Which do I recover first?

Crashes upon startup and displays a “not permitted” sign. 27” iMac macOS 11.6.7 (I don’t know if elCapitan or Sierra or what.)

I want to run Disk Utility. After starting with command R and accessing disk utility, I want to recover my volumes and disks. I don’t know these terms. The hierarchy (top to bottom) on the Disk Utility window is:

Macintosh HD

—————-

disk 2

> OS X Base System.

Which do I recover first?
