Time Machine in Ventura?

I have used a 2 TB external disk for back on Big Sur. I upgraded to Ventura. I'm trying to use the same disk on the same MacBook Air to backup using Time Machine on Venture. My disk shows as excluded, and backup does not work. Why?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 13.0

Your only means of sensibly retreating to Big Sur (if you have to) was the last Time Machine backup performed on Big Sur to that external drive. Once you backed up to it on Ventura, you cannot use that drive to restore your Big Sur environment.

I always set aside the last Time Machine backup and do not reuse it on the next operating system upgrade. Right now, for that reason, I have not installed Ventura until that external SSD arrives next Tuesday.

This was certainly true for Mojave -> Catalina, and Catalina -> Big Sur, but after that... still?

In macOS Big Sur, Apple added APFS support for Time Machine destination drives. As far as I'm aware, that specification has remained the same (only the Data volume gets backed up), along with how the System and Data volumes operate in macOS.

I can't say for sure, but might be worth a try restoring the Big Sur backup (once you have Big Sur itself installed onto the Mac). Migration Assistant should allow you to choose which point in time you wish to restore. Be sure to select a backup that was made while using Big Sur and not Ventura.
