My watch won’t pair with my new phone

My watch app keeps saying unable to pair, and there isn’t a pair for myself choice. I have iPhone 14Pro with IOS 16. I’ve already sent my old phone back and of course erased all of its content before doing so. Why won’t my watch pair with my new phone? I have the phone right nearby and watch on my wrist.
