Trade in iPhone 8

if I were to trade in my iPhone 8 for an iPhone 13 will I receive my new iPhone first or will I have to send my iPhone in first

You do not have to send in the old iPhone until after the new one arrives. They give you time to easily transfer everything to the new iPhone.
