Iphone 14 iOS 16 overheating with Carplay

My new iphone 14 with iOS 16 overheats every time I use Carplay. It overheats when it’s plugged in (USB to lightning) to the car audio system. I’ve used different cables and each charging USB port to try to narrow this down, but the results are always the same.

My wife and daughter have the same phone, and they do not overheat under the same circumstances.

Now I know this is ridiculous, but the only difference is that my phone is red. I call that out because Apple already replaced my first red phone once with another of the same color, and the new phone is doing the same thing. Coincidence I’m sure, but everything else about the phones is the same.

Is anyone else experiencing similar problems and is there a solution?

Thanks but it’s none of the normal stuff in that article. On long road trips, I’ve gotten that error on my phone but not on either of the other 2 phones. Also, it doesn’t happen on my sons iPhone 13 Pro. All of the phones are on the same iOS version (16.0.3).

All of the phones have used the same ports and cables. All of them have been in a relatively cool car (it’s fall in VA) and out of direct sunlight.

You’ve told us your iPhone is the same as the others except the color is different. But you also said:

Only thing I can suggest is contact Apple about it again. If you all have iPhone 14 and the only difference is that yours is red then there would appear to be something wrong with yours. Not sure if the color has anything to do with it though. I would wonder if it’s the port in the car or the cables but you say you all are using the same one (curious though…you can’t all be using the same exact cable at the same exact time or the same exact port so how have you been able to determine that the other phones don’t have the same issue when you can’t test them all at the same time? You can only allow one of the other iPhones to connect using the same cable you experienced the issue with in the same port for the same amount of time to be able to say for sure that theirs doesn’t exhibit the same issue. Them using their own cable on a different port on the same car ride doesn’t rule out an issue with your port that needs to be addressed or an issue with your cable. Just something to consider). Unless I’m misunderstanding something…you need to test out their phone using the same cable on the same port for the same amount of time and then go from there.

I guess I should have been more clear. I used the same ports and cables for all of the phones, although not exactly at the same time. I used them on the same road trip, so it was essentially at the same time, same ambient temperature, etc. The “good” phones were plugged in for at least the same amount of time it took for the “bad” phone to overheat.

I just wanna add that my iPhone 13 mini (and my previous iphone 12 mini) does the same thing in my 2022 Nissan Versa but does not do it in my 2019 Toyota RAV4. I’m using Apple USB lightning cables in both cases I have not tested my wife’s phone 14 in the Nissan since it’s my daily driver. it’s like the phone is trying to fast charge, but way too fast and inefficiently. It gets so hot I can’t barely touch it. The only thing that I’ve can do to mitigate it is by using a vent phone clip in order to have the air conditioning blow directly on the back of it to cool it off while it’s charging. This definitely can’t be good for my battery.
