photo to Blue initials in Messaging

why does a contact, in text messaging, change from their photo to Blue initials and blue circle?

That contact may be sharing their contact photo with you. Whatever they change their contact photo to look like, will be seen on your iPhone.

FYI: This feature is available in Settings ➡️ Messages ➡️ Share Name & Photo ➡️ Name and Photo Sharing: Set this to ON if you wish to use it.

this is messaging with family (son) the photo is there (the one in my contact) and then for 3 hours it changed to his initials in blue with a blue circle. then later in the day it changed back to the photo.
