Apple family paid app sharing not working

Dear All,

I have two apple devices, based out of India.

iPhone - Parent

iPad - Child (age 9)

I want paid app to be installed on iPad, Minecraft to be precise.

First I tried to add payment method on account of iPad - but considering its a minor account I didn't find any option.

Hence I bought the game on my account (running on iPhone) and started sharing purchases to my child account via apple family.

Now issue is when I try to download Minecraft via purchased in family option, I get failure message as given below.

Unable to Download

To download shared content, your Family must have a valid payment method.

funny part is

  • These sharing works fine for free apps, issue is faced only with paid apps.
  • There is no way I can find to uninstall app from my account and get the refund.

I saw similar issue is being faced in India, I hope #apple comes up with fix soon.

iPhone 11, iOS 16

Hello jigishpthakar,

When using Family Sharing and sharing a purchase, you would need to have a payment method associated to the family organizers account. You can find the steps for adding a payment method via your iPhone listed below. You can also find these steps, plus the steps for adding from another device in the following article.

  1. "Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Payment & Shipping. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.
  4. From here, you can do these things:
  • Add a payment method — Tap Add Payment Method.
  • Update a payment method — Tap the payment method, then edit your information. You might need to enter the security code that's printed on your credit or debit card. If you use the card with Apple Pay, go to the Wallet app to edit the card information.
  • Remove a payment method — Tap Edit, tap the red Delete button, then tap Remove. If you have an unpaid balance, have subscriptions including an iCloud storage plan, or you use purchase sharing, you can't remove all payment methods. Learn how to remove all payment methods.
  • Change the order of your payment methods — Tap Edit, then drag the move order icon .*"

Change, add, or remove Apple ID payment methods

As for requesting a refund, you can find the steps for doing so outlined in the article below. The article walks through requesting a refund for iTunes Store and App Store purchases from various devices.

Yes. I have purchased apps worth thousands believing the promise they can be shared with my kids. Now I have to make payment for each member again.

One can understand the difficulties Apple may be facing when it comes to Apps with periodic subscriptions unless a credit card is linked to the main account. But to deny the apps that required only a one time purchase to family members is totally incomprehensible.
