Moving tabs in Safari bug

Hello,

I'm on the latest version on Mac OS on M1 and since the latest upgrade I noticed one problem in Safari.

Having two Safari pages opened with different tabs each, if I move one or several tabs from one page to another (select one tab with the mouse and drag it to the other page) will keep the tab open in both pages (will not move) and only one is active at a time (the second one becomes a bit gray/dark and transparent). If I close the tab that one moved from any page, both tabs will be closed from both pages.

This was not happening in the past and it is not happening all the time.

If i restart Safari or the Mac, for a while will work as it should, but after few days the bug is happening again till the next restart. Today so many tabs were duplicated that in the end crashed Safari and lost all except the ones that I didn't move.

Long story short, if you want to group the tabs in separate pages, it is not going to happen because all tabs moved from one page to another will be present in all pages.

Anyone else experienced similar behaviour?

regards, 2p

Hello dragos_2p,

We'd like to help with this behavior.

Since the tabs are being duplicated, let's try limiting websites to one tab, so we can check if that improves the issue. Please check out the details in this link, which goes over how to limit a website to one tab: Prevent or create duplicate tabs in Safari on Mac

Prevent or create duplicate tabs in Safari on Mac

When you’re surfing the web or researching a subject, avoid cluttering your window with multiple tabs for the same website. You can also purposely duplicate a tab to have another view into the same website.

Limit a website to one tab

1. In the Safari app  on your Mac, begin typing a website address in the Smart Search field.

If you already have that address open in an existing tab, it appears below Switch to Tab.

2. Choose the website to use the existing tab.

Please also check out the information in the following page to ensure the correct process is being used to arrange tabs in Safari on Mac, and rule out a possible issue there: Arrange tabs in Safari on Mac

In the Safari app  on your Mac, do any of the following:

• Rearrange tabs: Drag a tab to a new position.
• Pin a website: Drag the tab with the website you want to pin to the left side of the tab bar. See Pin frequently visited websites.
• Scroll through tabs: If there are more tabs than are visible in the tab bar, swipe left or right over the tab bar to scroll through your tabs.

You can also press Command-1 through Command-9 to select one of your first nine tabs. To allow this, choose Safari > Preferences, click Tabs, then turn on the option. See Change Tabs preferences.

• Show tab overview: To see thumbnails of all the open tabs in the main window or a Tab Group, Control-click the name in the sidebar, then choose Show Tab Overview. To view one of the pages full size, click its thumbnail. To close a tab, click the Close button  in the upper-left corner of the thumbnail.
• Convert all Safari windows to tabs in a single window: Choose Window > Merge All Windows.

Thanks!

There's more of us running into the same bug, see (incl screenshots/videos):

I've reported it under FB11712622 (yet it shows "Similar reports: None" — so everyone who's been impacted by this please send feedback to Apple so it gets some visibility…)
