My Airpods are charged and the light is green, but it won't turn turn white - how can I fix this?

My Airpods are charged and the light is green on the case, but when I remove the airpods from the case, it remains green and when I hold down the reset button it does not flash white (just stays green). Has anyone experienced this and have a fix? It is driving me crazy!
