Hi: My Time Machine just started giving me a fully black screen instead of the normal Time Machine experience.
Years ago I think I had the same problem which I think was cuz I had a dual monitor set-up, but I can't find any reference to the solution.
Any ideas most appreciated!!!

Wow, this bug has been around a long time without being fixed by Apple!
Thanks for reminding me of the fix; I simply unplugged my right monitor and all was hunky dory :)
I believe that is still a bug with dual monitors. I can't remember if it only occurred with or without "Displays have separate spaces."
I also don't think it would happen if you started from the Primary display.
How do I choose to start from the left display (the one that is blacked out)?
Open a Finder window in that display and Enter Time Machine from the menu bar of that display.
I can't remember exactly how to do it, and I don't have multiple monitors to check.
I know at one point I would disconnect one of the displays when I wanted to use Time Machine.

PS The weird thing is that TM worked fine for several weeks with the same setup :)

Kind of silly, isn't it?
Guess it's not a high priority for the Apple Team.
But, in the general scheme of things, it's a "first world" problem :)
