My 27" 2020 iMac recently started freezing for five or more seconds at a time I'm on Monterey 12.5. I can't discern any pattern to this. I'm usually using Firefox, gmail, Lightroom, and/or Word or Excel. Anyone experiencing similar problems? Thanks.

I have a 2020 27-in iMac with Core i7 and 40GB RAM with an internal Apple SSD. It does not hang when running macOS 12.6 and did not hang prior to that operating system update.
I suggest you reboot your iMac into Safe Boot mode, then reboot normally to see if this clears your hanging experience. I also recommend updating it to macOS 12.6 while that is still in the Software Update panel and not Ventura which will be available later this month.
If you are running any anti-virus product, entirely remove it as it will have an adverse impact on your Mac's behavior and performance, while not finding any viruses, or preventing you from installing Malware.
