depth effect not working

Depth Effect feature on Lock Screen customization doesn't seem to be working. It's permanently greyed out in the menu tab, regardless of what photo I try to use for my Lock Screen. Any idea why?

No widgets are being added, all other features seem to work fine (ie. colors, duotone, etc.)

Hi rinaldi20,

Thanks for following up. This link has a little more information: Personalize your iPhone Lock Screen - Apple Support

Add a multilayered effect for a Lock Screen with a photo: Tap the More button at the bottom right, then choose Depth Effect (not available for all photos).

Based on the above, it sounds like your experience is normal, and if you'd like to send feedback, we're happy to share the link. Here it is: Product Feedback - Apple

Best wishes.

Hi rinaldi20,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

It appears you have seen the correct article and do know that Depth Effect is not available with wallpapers or widgets.

We'd next recommend updating to iOS 16.0.3 to rule out the iOS being out-of-date as a reason for this. Please see: Update your iPhone or iPad

"Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

  1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
  2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
  4. Choose the software update that you want to install. You can choose to stay on iOS or iPadOS 15 and still get important security updates. Or you can choose the option to upgrade to iOS or iPadOS 16."

If that doesn't resolve the issue, please contact Apple Support for a deeper dive.

Have a fantastic day!

Thank you, yes, I'm fully updated.

It works on only a handful of photos, and seems to be geared towards faces mostly. After spending an hour scrolling images and trying to select what I think might be acceptable based on the promos, the effect is extremely finicky in what images work and what doesn't. Also, it's very limited in how much of the clock can be covered -- with naturally what tips and instructions are provided doesn't cover these parameters/criteria.

Hopefully, they continue to develop this feature, or it improves once the 14 Pro I ordered arrives in a few weeks time.
