How to Reconnect Referenced Photos?

This is an annoying issue that has NEVER been fixed in Catalina.

I dont know about newer OS as I cannot update my Imac 27inch any further than Catalina 10.15.7

I use referenced photos on an external drive as the MAC does NOT have enough hard drive space to store all of my photos and videos.

Those referenced photos are now showing the square with a red line through them and if you click the square it has a link to Locate Referenced File.

I know why the reference is lost - (I changed some folder structures and folder names on the external drive)

I know exactly where the photos are on the external drive and can navigate them in finder just fine.

Actually I think I may have renamed the external HD itself.

I know how it i SUPPOSED to work by clicking the link "locate referennce photos"

that link DOES NOTHING at all

if you click the link it doesn't launch a finder window to select a drive or folder,

it does absolutely nothing at all, WHY?

So there is a few questions here

Is there a way to relink the referenced files that actually works?

Is there a way to bulk relink referenced files?

I have over 21000 organised photos and videos, this is a nightmare issue.

I dread the thought of having to completely delete and start the library from scratch,

How can I reconnect the lost references in the photos app?

This should not be so F$%&*N Hard!

I can easily fix the same issue in Final Cut Pro, why not in the photos App?

Bluntly:

a: If you want to use Photos then never run a referenced library. You can have your entire library on the external disk.

b: If you want to run a referenced library don't use Photos. It lacks all the basic tools you need for adding/deleting/reconnecting to the files, as you're learning. That hasn't changed from day one. In particular having the masters on an external and the library on an internal is a recipe for disaster. The solution for your issue right now is to return things to the way they were before.

Why can you do this in Final Cut and not Photos? How much did you pay for Final Cut? For Photos?

Make your choice between a and b and let us know.
