So I'm doing most of my work from home these days; and my iPhone is sitting next to my computer on it's charger for most of the day. Is this bad for the battery? Will I have to eventually worry about an "expanding battery" issue some time in the future? Or is this a non issue?

Lithium ion batteries can expand as they age. It's not unexpected behavior. You should make sure that, when the battery's maximum capacity drops below 80%, you have it replaced.
But as ProustGiulio noted, leaving it on the charger won't hurt it.

Battery age is partly a function of years and partly a function of number of charges cycles.
You can have Apple run diagnostics.
