highlighted screen capture won't disappear
This problem is ongoing, and I can't get rid of the highlighted area after capture and it forces a restart to remove it. Help!

Hit the escape key, or change the Display resolution in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Displays

try hitting the spacebar or tab to see if it makes a difference.
command-shift-4 lets you reset the screen capture area as well.
It's the settings in screen capture, it seems recording has been added and was default on my mac, now that I've changed the setting, it works fine!

I'm afraid that does not work. I am left with an area that is highlighted and a greyed out area outside of that rectangle. It's not the captured image that remains but the highlighting. The area stays lit up and the rest of the screen is in a dull grey, hard to see lighting.

The escape key does not resolve the issue but I will try looking at the display settings. This only happens with screen capture, which is a drag because I use it a lot.
