I’m buying a new iPhone 14 and am going to try the iCloud backup one time to transfer everything from my old iPhone to my new one. Do I need to purchase iCloud storage or can I do this one time at no cost. I have about 40 GBs of data

You don’t even need iCloud storage to transfer you can Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone or iPad.

Or if you do wish to use iCloud backup you can Get temporary iCloud storage when you buy a new iPhone or iPad.
