XQD reader no longer working with M1 chips?

I have a Mac Pro laptop and a Mac Studio, both have M1 chips in them. I do a heavy amount of photography with Nikon as my platform, and XQD cards are the only format that Nikon allows its new cameras to write to. Until two weeks ago, my reader and cards were perfectly fine. After a recent update, however, neither the Mac Pro nor the Mac Studio will recognize the XQD card reader. I purchased a new reader, and that did not change the outcome. I have also used various XQD cards to no avail. Anyone else having a similar issue or have an idea as to how I can resolve it? Thank you.

Thanks. I completed the above and made no progress. Different readers, different cards, and two different Macs. I called Apple and have gone through several layers to tech support, which took me through what you have recommended above + had me reinstall the OS. Sadly, it still does not work, and they have elevated it to their engineering team.

Very frustrating as I am a professional photographer, shoot with very modern equipment, and recently invested $10K+ in Mac Pro for travel and a Mac Studio for the office. Everything had been working perfectly until the software update, and now I am basically shut down.

I ran to the store this weekend to get a Windows PC, and everything working fine on that platform. Irritating solution and simply can't be out of business any longer.

Hey msoenen,

We understand you're having an issue with your MacBook Pro and Mac Studio with M1 chip being unable to recognize your XQD card reader. We'll be happy to help.

To get started, make sure that both your Macs are running the latest software available for them. If they already are, next do the following:

  1. Disconnect all external devices from the Mac, then restart and test.
  2. Boot into macOS Recovery (Use macOS Recovery on a Mac with Apple silicon - Apple Support ) and open Disk Utility and check to see if the SD card is read there and showing as a storage device by going to Disk Utility > View > select "Show All Devices" to see if any items appear for the card.
  3. If the card appears but does not have a mountable volume, or if it works in Recovery let us know
  4. If the card doesn't work in Recovery, try testing with a card from another manufacturer.
  5. If possible, test using an external reader and another Mac.

Keep us posted on the results and we'll go from there.

We hope this information helps out though.

Take care!
