Camera not genuine

Issue: Apple iPhone 12 Max Pro has message under Settings>General>About that reads:

“Unknown part. Unable to determine if your iPhone camera is a genuine Apple part. This could be because the part is non-genuine, not functioning as expected, or the installation is incomplete.”

This iPhone is a little over a year old, has never had any maintenance done on it, has never been opened, and this message randomly appeared (there was no event to cause this).

Almost everything I have read says that it will just go away, but it hasn’t, and it has affected my facial recognition, as well as causing my camera to no longer work with some apps.

I have factory reset the phone, plugged it into my computer to sync with iTunes, and called customer support. Since I didn’t buy Apple Care, I was basically told “oh well,” and that I’m going to need to pay out of pocket to replace the camera hardware ($400+).

Apparently it’s not an issue that is common enough to Apple to keep tabs on it, so no “open case.”

How is this on me to fix? The product failed. I have had older iPhones last longer than this one.

i saw this issue reported on another thread too. My sister had this message popup as well on her 13 Pro Max when she was taking a couple of pics this morning; no hardware changes.

But first thing i asked her was what software version she is running, and it is 15.7, which was released just yesterday. And you seem to be running ios 16, which was also released just yesterday. These updates probably got installed automatically or manually in the previous 24 hours.

If the issue/message doesn't go away by a restart, or in a couple of days, then...

To me, this indicates some kind of bug in the code that is shared between these new software releases from Apple yesterday (September 12, 2022).

Hopefully, Apple gets plenty of logs (and quickly enough) from iPhones having this issue, so they can figure it out and fix it ASAP.
