Display Settings (refresh rate) after wake from sleep

I've been having trouble with my second monitor display settings. I have an M1 macbook pro 13", BenQ BL2711U monitor, and an Lenovo thinkpad LDA-KP Usb-C hub. The cables are Monitor -> DisplayPort 1.2 -> Hub -> USB-C -> Macbook.

Every time the laptop wakes from sleep, the display settings change to use "Variable Refresh Rate 30-60Hz", which the monitor does not support, and every time, in order to get the monitor to come back to life, I have to manually switch the display settings to fixed "60 Hz".

There are no options on the monitor to disable variable refresh rate, adaptive sync, freesync, etc. (The manual says that this is controlled by the driver).

Are there any known workarounds, or is a bug fix in the release pipeline?

Hello xelaxelaxela,

We see that you're having an issue with an external monitor that you're using with your MacBook Pro, and we'd like to provide some information that can help.

Take a look at the following article. Although the title of the article does not match the exact issue that you're having, it does have some setting suggestions that might help. If the issue remains after making some of adjustments from article, then you'll want to reach out to the manufacturer of the monitor for compatibility questions.

Kareng12,

Thank you for the troubleshooting link, but unfortunately this does not address the core issue: A sleep/wake cycle changes the refresh rate settings of the external display (without the user being notified of the change, and without the user asking for the change). This behavior results in a black screen, and requires manual intervention every time the laptop wakes from sleep (it’s very very annoying).

There are multiple reports of this issue online. it would be much appreciated if you could escalate this bug to a product manager that can assist in triage and getting a fix prioritized for next release.

Thanks for getting back to us, xelaxelaxela. It’s appreciated.

Since the previous troubleshooting didn’t help resolve the issue, we have a couple of isolation steps to narrow down where this issue is coming from.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support -- Please restart your MacBook Pro in safe mode using the steps under "Apple silicon”:

1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

Once your Mac is in safe mode, adjust the sleep/wake time for a short duration and allow it to go to sleep. When it wakes again, see if the settings for the second display have adjusted on their own. Whether the issue happens or not in safe mode, restart your Mac normally to exit.

If the issue didn’t happen while in safe mode, test the issue again after a normal restart.

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support -- If the issue happened while in safe mode or returned after a normal restart, create a new Administrator account to test the issue. Once the account has been created, log out of your own account and into the the new one and test the issue once again.

Please let us know the results when you're able.

All the best.
