New SIM card; contacts messed up

Somebody asked this question a while back:

"I just changed my SIM card due to an international move. All of my contacts are still there in my contacts app, as I had them saved to iCloud and not my old SIM card, but when I receive iMessages from anyone their contact names are no longer appearing, even when I’m receiving iMessages over WiFi instead of cellular data."

...and got 2 answers, neither of which fixed this same problem I ran into when I changed SIMs going from the US to the UK. The solution for me was to add "+1" to my US numbers that weren't showing up, and I guess it is good practice to "internationalize" all the phone numbers in your Contacts with "+" country-code.

No idea why dial assistant doesn't sort this automatically, but maybe that's outbound only.

Unlike some Android devices, contacts are neither stored locally on an iPhone nor in SIM. They are synced to an email account that you had Google, iCloud, AOL, Exchange, Outlook, Yahoo or any Other

If Contacts were on iCloud, try this --> Restore contacts, calendars, bookmarks, and more using ...

Else Add the email account that stores your contacts in the IOS mail app and enable Contacts. If you have a corporate email account added through a profile on your device, please check with your organisation's system administrator.
