Safari page closes when I download

Why does my Safari page close every time I download a document?

I do a lot of genealogy research and every time I download a census record or historical document my Safari page closes and I have to click on the Safari icon or the other Safari page I have open, click on the Window menu then click on the page that closed to re-open it. It wouldn't be a big deal but I download a lot of documents for many years and it's getting annoying.

Is there a way to change how this works so I can download a document from a page without Safari closing the page that I'm working on? Thank you in advance!

Hello Rtsprouse,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We have some steps to walk through to help with determining why your Safari is closing every time you download files. That is not expected behavior and we want to get Safari working great for you.

One way of ruling out what might be causing the issue, is to book your MacBook Pro to safe mode. Then open Safari, test downloading some files.

Start up your Mac in safe mode

Next, create a test user profile with admin privileges, log in to it, then test Safari:

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

If the issue doesn't present while in safe mode, there would be an app or startup item that is causing issues with Safari. If the issue doesn't present in the new user profile, the issue is related to your user profile specifically.

Keep us updated on how it's going.

Take care.
