Mac Mail copying instead of moving

Mac Mail seems to be copying messages instead of moving messages when I drag them into folders. How do I fix this?

Hello Bckb00,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We can help you determine why the mail messages are not moving as expected.

We see you viewed the Apple Support page for If you can’t send or receive email on your Mac - Apple Support

Try these steps to move the messages:

"Move emails

  1. In the Mail app  on your Mac, select one or more messages.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Drag the messages to a mailbox in the Mail sidebar or the Favorites bar.
    • Click the Move To button  in the Mail toolbar (you may need to first click the More Toolbar Items button ), then choose a mailbox (or use the Touch Bar). Mail may suggest a mailbox based on where you’ve moved similar messages in the past.

If you move a message that’s part of an email conversation to another mailbox, it becomes a related message, but is still shown in the conversation. See View email conversations."

This Apple Support page has the full details: Move or copy emails between mailboxes in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

If the issue remains, does this happen with your iCloud mail account, or a third-party provider? Does it happen if you use webmail to move the messages?

We hope this helps to isolate the issue so you can properly manage your messages.

Cheers!
