Can you mix AirPods of different generations?

I have first and second generation sets of airpods. The left one works on one set and the right one works on the second set. Is there any way they can be used at the same time so I can have a full working set? So very frustrating to have 2 sets and neither one is fully functional. I guess this is programmed obsolescence?
