Deleting Bootcamp partition does not restore memory, potential APFS corruption

Hi! This is my first post here so let me know if I can communicate more clearly.

I recently tried to remove a Windows bootcamp partition from my Macbook using the system's Bootcamp app (not directly deleting the partition through Disk Utility). At the end of the process I got an error:

“Your disk could not be restored. An error occurred while resizing the APFS Container. Please run First Aid from within Disk Utility to check and fix the error.”

Along with this, the storage that the Bootcamp partition had originally taken up (92 GB) was not restored to my storage.

I’ve done some searching and attempting to fix the problem but haven’t seen any luck. My best guess from searching is that one of my APFS volumes is corrupted, but I'm not sure. Could anyone give me some help/guidance on identifying or resolving this issue and reclaiming my 92 GB?

Below I’ve described what I’ve done to try solving the problem.

First I tried running first aid on every option in Disk Utility.

Here is a list of the sidebar in my Disk Utility (I ran First Aid on each line):

Running First Aid in Disk Utility on “Macintosh HD - Data” gives:

Running First Aid in Disk Utility on “Container disk1” gives:

Message: First Aid found corruption that needs to be repaired. To repair the startup volume, run First Aid from Recovery. Click Done to continue.

Log:

Next, I went to Partition “APPLE SSD AP0512M MEDIA” and manually delete the 92 GB of Free Space:

I received the following message and log:

"Operation failed because corruption was found in the startup container disk1 or one of its volumes. Run First Aid from Recovery to repair it, then try again. Click Done to continue."

Next, I went into recovery mode and ran first aid on every option in the sidebar:

Running First Aid on “Macintosh HD - Data” gave:

Message:

First Aid process has failed.

Log:

I ran "diskutil list" in Recovery mode and obtained the following:

Finally, I ran "diskutil list" in normal boot and got the following:

As you can see in both diskutil list results, the 92 GB (free space) partition is still there and I cannot restore it to my normal storage.

I’m pretty stuck at this point, so if anyone has any guidance I’d really appreciate it! Also, I apologize for the inclusion of images for Recovery mode tests. I don’t know how to transfer copied text/logs from recovery mode to create this post, so if anyone knows how let me know and I can reformat this post to be more readable.

Thank you so much for the help!!

Thank you for all the information! It really does help a lot.

Do you have a Time Machine backup? The easiest way to fix this issue would be a backup, then a full wipe in macOS Recovery, then a restore from the backup. All partitions will be reset.

  1. Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support
  2. Restore your Mac from a backup - Apple Support
  3. Use Disk Utility to erase an Intel-based Mac - Apple Support
