DNS resolution failure with a twist

Hi there. I’ve had connectivity issues with my MacBook Pro (m1 chip) all morning. Diagnostics tells me it’s a dns resolution failure but the weird thing is that I can restart the mac and get it to connect but at horrible download speeds (3mbps) and excellent upload speeds (112 mbps).

what’s going on?

I should add that all other devices on the network are performing normally including my cell but also many other laptops.

update: it’s lurching it’s way through the internet now with blazing fast (expected) speeds and then stumbling for 20-30 second periods of waiting before reconnecting again.

Thirty-second pauses are a common sign of a DNS server or connectivity failure.

The usual DNS timeout is 30 seconds.

I’fe seen this with one DNS server of the usual pair (or group) of DNS servers that’s malfunctioning.

When translations reach that server, things stall.

But if an IT network restart solves this, the only lingering issue is whether the problem might re-occur.
