Naming virtual desktops

I use virtual desktops to group emails, documents, terminal sessions, and so on, related to a single task. I would like to be able to rename the desktop with a short description of the task, and I would like to be able to do it through the native user interface, rather than using a clumsy workaround such as putting sticky notes on each desktop. Is this possible? It does not seem like an unreasonable feature request, but it has been missing since virtual desktops were introduced and it limits their usefulness for someone like me.
