WHAT is a good alternative to the migration assistant method of moving files/programs, docs/pictures from my old MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Air.

Migration assistant will be involved no matter what unless you want to do it all manually...

The fastest, most effective way to do it is using the Time Machine backup drive you've been using to back up your old MacBook.
