black screen with padlock logo

older MacBook Pro. turned it on and all I can get is a black screen with an inch sized white padlock symbol..underneath that is a place to type in a password, but the regular password does not work to unlock. any tips to get this out of warranty Mac to work?

According to Apple:


Lock icon 🔒



If your Mac is using a firmware password, the lock icon appears when you try to start up from another disk or volume, such as an external drive or macOS Recovery. Enter the firmware password to continue.
