IMessage features on iPhone

I sent an iMessage TEXT; & at the bottom right was a printed statement "READ" ? My question: Did the recipient "READ" the text I sent, Or is recipient "GOING TO READ" text in a future time ??

It means that the recipient has the "Show Read Receipts" feature enabled and that they have read (past tense) your message.
