No luck setting up a shared TimeMachine folder on a G-Drive pro thunderbolt 3 drive

Just purchased G-Drive Pro Thunderbolt 3 12TB drive to backup my two Macs.

The Apple Support app has a page on setting up TimeMachine.

There is a section: "Mac shared as a Time Machine backup destination"

I followed those instructions. TimeMachine had previously formatted the drive as APFS.

I was able to create a folder named TimeMachine and had it setup with File Sharing.

This machine and my second Mac can both access the TimeMachine folder in Finder.

On the second machine, I can see the shared TimeMachine folder in Sys Prefs TimeMachine page.

I can select that as a backup location, but when I try to run a backup it gets permissions problems.

In the machine that has the drive attached directly I cannot see or select the TimeMachine folder.

What is the magic for getting this to work??

Hey there MichaelBurns,

We recommend starting with the general troubleshooting steps to help with Time Machine backups found below, then continue with the link attached:

Make sure your backup disk is plugged in, turned on, and securely connected to your Mac. If your backup disk is on a network, make sure both the disk and your Mac are connected to the network. If the network is experiencing problems, your backup disk may not be available.

Download and install all recent updates to macOS. If you have a Time Capsule, update it with the latest software and firmware. See Keep your Mac up to date and the Apple Support article Update the firmware on your AirPort base station.

If you upgraded to macOS Monterey, your existing backups are not upgraded. New backups that are created can be used only on macOS Big Sur or later.

I had already read the simple troubleshooting tips. They are not helpful to my situation.

I am very familiar with TimeMachine and have used it for many years.

I have also used a single drive to backup two machines. It always created a Backupdb folder.

peach machine created its own named backup directories. I simply needed to move the drive from one machine to the other.

this has worked for years. But with BigSur and Monterrey new backup drives are created differently.

please read my question and address the issues I mention or point me to some doc that describes in detail how to do what I am attempting to do.
