I can’t activate lost mode for my Apple Watch

I haven’t seen it for 2 months and figured it was in my suitcase from my last trip. But it’s not there, so I tried to activate Lost Mode but the app was unable to activate. Can Apple help me find out the last place the watch was on? I may even have Apple care so I’m just trying to figure out my next move. Thanks for any advice.
