am i able to use the $150 gift card i get from purchasing a macbook on the macbooks price. so like the $150 comes off of the total

$150 Apple Card I recently bought a MacBook Pro 13'' and got a $150 Apple Gift Card with the student discount bundle. I'm confused on how it's a discount, because either way I have to pay $12.50 every month for the gift card plus the monthly MacBook price. Can someone explain that to me?
